&Tradition

&tradition is a Danish design manufacturer that was established in 2010 with a founding principle that is tied to both tradition and innovation… producing a range of lighting and furniture designs that spans from the 1930s through the present. In the words of its founder, Martin Kornbek Hansen, “All of our designers have a unique vision and their designs have the capacity to reach people in their everyday lives. The stable of designers that we work with are connected by a desire to push manufacturing techniques and to find innovative uses for materials.”  Switch Modern has curated a selection of &tradition’s lighting – suspension, table, wall, and floor lamps – that highlights the iconic 20th century designs of Arne Jacobsen, Jorn Utzon, and Verner Panton, as well as celebrates the contemporary designs by Sofie Refer, Norm, Ontwerpduo, Studio Vit, and Space Copenhagen.

Verner Panton

Verner Panton (1926 – 1998) was born in Gentofte, Denmark. He studied architecture at Copenhagen’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts before interning at Arne Jacobsen’s architectural practice. Panton launched a successful career in furniture and interior design soon after, opening his design studio in 1955. He became well-known for his avant-garde designs infused with a futuristic op art aesthetic, experimenting with vivid colors and the influence of lighting on surroundings. Panton’s work is manufactured by a number of brands including &Tradition, Louis Poulsen, Verpan, and Vitra. Panton’s designs are included in the permanent collections of museums around the world.
