USM Haller pioneered modular design in 1960s by providing elements that can be configured to create a number of customized pieces of furniture. Using USM's patented ball joint system that connects cylindrical rods in varying lengths, a framework is created into which an extensive range of modular elements can be inserted. These include painted finish metal or glass panels of varying sizes, drop-down doors, flip-up doors, extension doors, drawers of varying sizes, glass or metal shelf dividers, extension shelves, angled shelves, along with accessories like baskets, boxes, and trays for organizing the resulting compartments or shelves. Then, once you factor in the range of colors possible for the panels, your resulting piece of furniture is something truly unique - custom designed for your specific needs and interior.

The history of USM (Ulrich Schärer Münsingen) stretches back to 1885, when it was founded as a simple hardware store in Münsingen, Switzerland. Eventually the company grew into a factory producing window fittings and similar items, but it wasn’t until the 1960s that USM began manufacturing the products that have given it a worldwide reputation: USM Haller Systems. This is a type of modular furniture that is valued for its highly flexible design and aesthetic qualities. In fact, USM Haller furniture became part of the New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in 2001. Combining durable construction and formal elegance, USM modular furniture will enliven any room in your home, and Switch Modern is among the few showrooms where you can find these exceptional products.
