Bocci 22: Outlet Aesthetics

The Bocci 22 System is a comprehensive suite of minimal UL-listed outlets and devices designed by Omer Arbel for Bocci that use standard junction boxes to seamlessly flush-mount into any wall surface. The Bocci 22 Series challenges the traditional, tired and ubiquitous cover plate concept. Designed to "mud" directly into drywall without a visible cover plate or trim. Alternatively, it may be set flush into millwork, marble, tile, glass, or any other wall surface.

Bocci 22 outlets installed vertically in kitchen tile backsplash thoughtfully organized within the rectilinear shape of the individual tile.

When thinking about an outlet, one typically thinks of two plug receptacles that are presented vertically within a j-box. These are typically white over which a rectilinear decorative plate covers the rough edges of the cut drywall.

Throughout the 20th century, plug receptacles eventually were offered in more color options; in addition to white, black, gray, and ivory are now fairly standard. The covers that fit over the outlet have also become increasingly decorative - not only are these available with seemingly whatever fashion graphic one could imagine, they are also available in different materials - metal, mirrored glass, wood, and plastic. Seemingly, the "aesthetic outlet objective" throughout the second half of the 20th century was to take the traditional form of the two-plug outlet and somehow make it different by changing up the color of the outlet itself or contextualizing it with a switch cover that functioned like a decorative frame or "miniature wall art."

Just a sampling of the range of decoration on outlet covers - from graphic stripes to Eduard Munch's iconic late 19th century painting, The Scream.

Akin to "visual punctuation," Bocci 22 outlets installed in wood kitchen cabinetry.

Most Bocci 22 outlets are available in four colors - white, almond, gray, and black.
