The Atollo lamp has become one of the best known symbols of 20th century Italian design. Atollo features a cylindrical base with a conical top akin to the shape of a sharpened pencil – its large hemispherical diffuser appears to impossibly rest upon an imagined point of this cone. This “tip” doesn’t exist but like a sharpened pencil, the viewer imagines one to be there. This engaging illusion of visual precariousness is part of the profound sense of wonder that Atollo engenders. The interior of its hemispherical diffuser is finished in white so that light is diffused downward – most noticeably onto the cone portion of the base that visually becomes like an island engulfed in shadow. The metaphor from which we suspect that Vico Magistretti chose the lamp’s name… Atollo quite literally means “island” in Italian.
Atollo was awarded the prestigious Compasso d'Oro in 1979 and is in the permanent collections of several museums worldwide including New York’s Museum of Modern Art and Munich’s Die Neue Sammlung. It’s available in different sizes. UL listed. Manufactured by Oluce.
