Designed by: Michele De Lucchi
Manufactured by: Memphis Milano
The First chair is an iconic and sculptural creation conceived by Michele De Lucchi and introduced in 1983 as part of Memphis' third annual collection. This playful design uses discs and spheres as elements within a circular hoop to schematically suggest a seat, back, and arms. The design clearly references the popular "hoop chair" from the 1950s - the circular orientation of First's metal hoop akin to a satellite's orbit. As much sculpture as it is chair, First was arguably one of Memphis' commercial successes with many First chairs actually sold in the mid 1980s. The First chair is included in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Centre Pompidou, Paris. Manufactured by Memphis Milano..
