Designed in 1981 as part of Memphis' inaugural collection, Ashoka is a table or floor lamp that is an assemblage of brightly-colored forms joined together to create a totemic sculpture. Ashoka takes its name from the king of the Maurya Empire (c. 322-185 BCE) - India's first, most powerful pan-Indian empire. While this seemingly unstable stack of playful geometric forms appears "de-structured," the lamp itself is actually a well-balanced, perfectly symmetrical arrangement of forms resting on a solid gray rectangular base. Like other lighting in various Memphis collections throughout the early 1980s, Ashoka's aesthetic is informed by the inclusion of visible white globular light bulbs that would "punctuate" its perimeter. Ashoka is included in the permanent collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. Manufactured by Memphis Milano.
