Designed by: Ettore Sottsass
Manufactured by: Memphis Milano
Designed in 1981 as part of Memphis' inaugural collection, Carlton has become an absolute icon! An assemblage of brightly-colored laminate surfaces presented vertically, horizontally, and at various cants, it functions as much as a totemic sculpture as it does as bookcase/shelving/room divider/chest of drawers. While these cants present themselves as seemingly random, the resulting form is a logical arrangement of equilateral triangles. While rendered in solid colors throughout punctuated with black, Carlton's base features the designer's iconic Bacterio pattern laminate - a frenzied design in black and white that would inform graphic design in the 1980s. Carlton is included in the permanent collections of museums worldwide including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Metropolitan Museum, New York; the Cooper-Hewitt Museum, New York; and the High Museum of Art, Atlanta. Manufactured by Memphis Milano.
