Overview

Tartan is the unmistakeable design characteristic of Scottish woollen kilts with its perpendicular criss cross pattern generating ever changing geometric motifs. The Tartan ceiling light has a blown glass diffuser made using the technique of mouth blowing into a mold with a design engraved in it, enriching it with lines and folds echoing the weave of Scottish cloth and a graphic play of light and shadow. UL Listed. Manufactured by Foscarini.

Foscarini was founded in 1981 on the Italian island of Murano near Venice. Given its location, its early production pieces were logically focused primarily on blown glass. By the late 1980s, Carlo Urbinati and Alessandro Vecchiat (both had previously worked as designers for Foscarini) took over management of the company and expanded its mission to include research and experimentation in a range of materials other than glass – molded polyethelyene, aluminum, polycarbonate, even Kevlar thread and silicon-coated metal. This commitment to innovation through materials has led to successful collaborations with a number of renowned architects and designers over the past few decades including Ferruccio Laviani, Tom Dixon, Aldo Cibic, Piero Lissoni, Marc Sadler, James Irvine, Karim Rashid, Patricia Urquiola, Luca Nichetto, and Valerio Bottin. Foscarini has received numerous, prestigious awards and many of its designs are now in the permanent collections of several museums around the world.

Roberto Palomba (born 1963 in Caligari, Italy) and Ludovica Palomba Serafini (born 1961 in Rome, Italy) graduated from the University of Rome and, in 1994, established their design office, Palomba e Serafini Associated Studio, in Verona, Italy. The designers have received numerous international awards and recognitions such as Compasso D'Oro, Elle Decoration International Design Award, Red Dot, Design Plus, Good Design Award and German Design Award. They have collaborated with numerous brands including Antolini, Benetti, Bisazza, Boffi, Brix, Cappellini, Dornbracht, Driade, Elica, Elmar, Exteta, Fiam, Flaminia, Foscarini, Kartell, KitchenAid, Kos, Laufen, Lema, Plank, Poltrona Frau, Rapsel, Redaelli, Salviati, Sawaya & Moroni, Samsung, Schiffini, Tubes, Valli&Valli, Viccarbe, When Objects Work, Zanotta, and Zucchetti.
