Eileen Gray's mid 1920s daybed design is considered to be one of her most famous. A minimalist form that is characterized by its overarching rectilinear shape where the designer's use of chrome-plated tubular steel literally "frames" the upholstered seating/reclining expanse. This long, broad cushion has been meticulously tufted in a way that breaks up the surface into a pattern of rectangles and squares - these resulting shapes relate beautifully to the side profiles of both the cushion itself as well as the base. The tubular steel rises above the seating plane, forming a rectangle that again "frames" the negative space beyond the daybed. Not only is this resulting outline an engaging decorative element, it's also a pragmatic one that provides a support mechanism for the daybed's user to even add a loose cushion or throw. Eileen Gray's daybed is both a sculptural masterpiece and an extraordinarily comfortable seating design. It becomes the centerpiece of any interior in which it is placed - its form prompts the daybed's placement within a room so that it can be enjoyed from multiple vistas. Upholstery is available in a wide range of fabric and leather options. Given that an average person's height has changed over the nearly 100 years since this piece was first designed, in addition to the original dimensions, ClassiCon also offers a slightly larger version. ClassiCon, a clever portmanteau deriving from the words “classic” and “contemporary,” perfectly fuses the range of designs produced by this German manufacturer. Founded in 1990, ClassiCon holds the worldwide license to produce Eileen Gray’s iconic range of designs from the 20th century. Before her death in 1973, Gray collaborated with London’s Aram Designs to issue many of her furnishings as production pieces – lounge chairs, sofas, side tables, dining tables, screens, and rugs. ClassiCon is the only licensed manufacturer of Eileen Gray’s designs. In addition to its meticulous production of her furnishings from the 1920s and 1930s, ClassiCon collaborates with a number of contemporary designers like Konstantin Grcic, Jader Alme ida, Nina Mair, Sauerbruch Hutton, Edward Barber + Jay Osgerby, Neri & Hu, Sebastian Herkner, to create new pieces. All ClassicCon pieces are presented as part of an edition where each example is both stamped and numbered. Switch Modern presents a cohesive ClassiCon range that encompasses nearly 100 years of important design.
