Designed by: Gaetano Pesce
Manufactured by: Cassina
As its name in Italian suggests, this sofa schematically represents "sunset" in New York with its seating structure resembling buildings of various elevations punctuated with a pattern of windows - its central backrest is a deep orange sun. Pesce's sofa as "metropolis skyline" blurs fine art and functionality to create an object that is essentially a soft sculpture. Designed in 1980, Cassina revisited this 20th century design icon in 2022 that resulted in a limited edition of 50 examples. Tramonto a New York is a tribute to the designer's adopted city. Each ofthe sofa's individually crafted "skyscrapers" is upholstered in an exclusive fabric whose raised rectangular texture places light and shadow side by side, creating the effect of light that reflects off the windows. In contrast, the setting sun, wrapped in vivid red satin, drops between the buildings that form the backrest. The elements have a plywood frame and elastic webbing and a structure in variable density natural rubber covered in recycled PET polyester batting, encased in fabric. This revisited edition has been "up-sized" to a larger version than the 1980 historic original. To guarantee the authenticity of this special edition, each sofa bears a satin finish steel plate with the Cassina logo, the name of the design, the serial number and the name and signature of the artist, Gaetano Pesce. The 1980 version of Tramonto a New York is included in the permanent collections of the Vitra Design Museum, Germany, and the Triennale di Milano Museum, Milan. Manufactured by Cassina.
