Overview

Onto is an upholstered bed with a deceptively simple look with many subtle elements considered into its construction and design. The sleek profile of Onto features a tall, cushioned headboard that is angled for sitting up in bed. It also has recessed steel legs at the foot of the bed to prevent toe stubbing and the castors underneath the headboard allow for easy movement for both cleaning as well as repositioning within an interior. The tailored cover for Onto's headboard and rails are removable for cleaning or replacement. A cotton headboard protector is also available and is machine-washable. Replacement covers for an existing Onto bed are also available. Manufactured by Bensen.

Bensen

Bensen is a design and manufacturing group that was founded in 1981 by Niels Bendtsen and is based in Vancouver, Canada. Along with his staff, Danish-born Bendtsen not only designs the pieces for Bensen, but also oversees production of its extensive line of home furnishings – sofas, sectionals, tables, chairs, stools, credenzas, cabinets, and beds. According to Bendsten, “Quality is a funny concept. We tend to think of it as being associated with handcraft. But quality is also about your attitude to design. Craftsmanship is just as much about how you run the machines that are necessary for economic viability.” Bensen’s philosophy of balancing simplicity and honesty in design is a sentiment that Switch Modern shares. Niels Bendtsen

Niels Bendtsen (born 1943 in Denmark) has always been exposed to design and craftsmanship. After emigrating in 1951 to Canada, he began to apprentice under his father, a cabinetmaker who worked under Jacob Kjaer, and continued to build Scandinavian furniture when in Canada. Starting in 1963, Bendtsen had his own retail store where he sold his father's designs, as well as other pieces from Scandinavia. Through this retail experience, he started to learn more about design and manufacturing... in 1972, he sold his store and moved to Denmark to work as a full time designer. While there he worked for a number of Scandinavian companies, including Eilersen, Ikea, and Kebe. It was during this time that he designed the Ribbon chair (1975) for Kebe - this piece is included in the permanent collection of New York's Museum of Modern Art. Bendtsen returned to Canada in the 1980s and has continued to create work his namesake brand, Bensen, as well as Keilhauer, Linteloo, and Montis.
