Danish designer Hans Wegner (1914-2007) was apprenticed to a cabinet maker before studying in Copenhagen at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts and the Architectural Academy. A renowned furniture designer, Wegner is considered one of the significant forces behind the “Danish Modern” movement and helped develop organic functionalism. Some of his key furniture designs include the Chinese Chair, Peacock Chair, and Wishbone Chair. His work has won many awards over the years – the Lunning Prize (1951) and The 8th International Design Award (1997). Hans Wegner's designs have been manufactured by a number of prominent brands including AP Stolen, Andreas Tuck, Getama, Fredericia Stolefabrik, Carl Hansen & Son, Johannes Hansen, Fritz Hansen, and Erik Jorgensen. Though best known for his chair designs, Wegner also created lighting, beds, cabinets, tables, and desks. The designer’s pieces have been included in a number of museums worldwide including New York’s Museum of Modern Art and Munich’s Die Neue Sammlung.
