DS-165 Sectional Sofa

Designed by:  Hugo de Ruiter
Manufactured by:  de Sede

It is not a sofa. Nor is it a sofa group. And it is certainly not a neatly arranged row of armchairs. What it is a matchless seating environment that calls to mind the great masterpieces of landscape gardening. Or a perfectly fashioned town in miniature. In his eye, Hugo de Ruiter envisioned an unending play of possible additions and variations when he put his concept for the DS-165 down on paper. The result is a new design for contemporary society in its ever-growing quest for the structures of security in the midst of the breakneck change of information technology. The adjustable backrests enable new seating positions to be achieved at will. And thanks to the arrangement of rectangular seating elements, the sofa can develop to fit every living area as if it were a growing organism. You can turn through 360 degrees on Hugo de Ruiter's sofa - with the armrests following on smoothly as required. It heralds in a rediscovery of the pleasure of adapting life to one's prevailing mood. The DS-165 represents an optimistic start into the 21st century and is predestined to become a cult object in the future. Black powder coated metal frame with wood. Seat edge is comfort foam core. Seat cushions are SEDEX upholstery with SEDE-Lux covering. Back is flexible plate with comfort foam core and SEDE-Fill covering. Legs are polished aluminum. Manufactured by de Sede. De Sede

De Sede products are designed and built to lend style and comfort to living spaces, while reinforcing harmony with nature and people. Fundamental to this philosophy is a commitment to original thinking and obsessive Swiss quality.  Beginning as a saddler’s workshop, the firm evolved to become internationally known for hand-crafted leather furniture, and still leads the way in comfortable, innovative leather seating. Today’s collection presents coordinated lines of benches, armchairs, sofas, and tables, ideal for inspired living in both commercial and residential spaces.

Hugo de Ruiter

Hugo de Ruiter (born 1959 in the Netherlands) studied 3D product design and furniture production before working with a furniture manufacturer. He founded his own design studio, Hugo de Ruiter Design, in 2000, and has developed a reputation for modernly designed upholstered furniture, created for brands like Switzerland’s de Sede, de Ruiter said “I consider upholstered furniture to be like a third skin. Just like a good piece of clothing, your furniture should be comfortable and suit you in many ways.” He is known for always looking for new ideas that go beyond conventional seating design, exploring innovative new approaches to furniture creation.
