Carl Hansen & Son

Carl Hansen opened his eponymous furniture workshop in 1908 in Odense, Denmark. As Carl Hansen & Son grew and times changed, the manufacturer started a fruitful collaboration with Hans Wegner in the late 1940s resulting in many of the designer’s classic 20th century designs from the 1950s and 1960s – dining and lounge chairs, coffee and dining tables, sofas – including his much-celebrated pieces like the CH07, Wishbone, Elbow, and Oculus. True to its founding values, it remains Carl Hansen’s ambition in the 21st century to continue making furniture of the highest quality, beauty, and value with respect for sustainable design, materials, and more than 100 years of its tradition of legendary craftsmanship. Switch Modern shows a curated collection of classics from Hans Wegner, Kaare Klint, Mogens Koch, Frits Henningsen, Poul Kjaerholm, and Ole Wanscher, along with contemporary designs destined to become classics by Morten Gottler, Strand & Hvass, and Tadao Ando.

Hans J. Wegner

Danish designer Hans Wegner (1914-2007) was apprenticed to a cabinet maker before studying in Copenhagen at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts and the Architectural Academy. A renowned furniture designer, Wegner is considered one of the significant forces behind the “Danish Modern” movement and helped develop organic functionalism. Some of his key furniture designs include the Chinese Chair, Peacock Chair, and Wishbone Chair. His work has won many awards over the years – the Lunning Prize (1951) and The 8th International Design Award (1997). Hans Wegner's designs have been manufactured by a number of prominent brands including AP Stolen, Andreas Tuck, Getama, Fredericia Stolefabrik, Carl Hansen & Son, Johannes Hansen, Fritz Hansen, and Erik Jorgensen. Though best known for his chair designs, Wegner also created lighting, beds, cabinets, tables, and desks. The designer’s pieces have been included in a number of museums worldwide including New York’s Museum of Modern Art and Munich’s Die Neue Sammlung.
