THE STORY OF CREATION - BOCCI's New 73 Series
By Alex
7/26/2015 2:16:00 PM

BOCCI 73 Light

Bocci is a bit of a darling of ours here at Switch Modern and we couldn't resist sharing this mesmerizing behind-the-scenes peek at the creation of their new 73 series. The line explores an unusual technique in which glass is blown into an ultra heat-resistant pouch of ceramic fabric...

BOCCI 73 Light - Switch Modern

The result is a brilliant combination of artisanal expertise and a counter-intuitive design mix of soft fabric texture and sleek hard glass. Each 73 blown is intended for use in clusters which, when viewed as a whole, read as a stunning hybrid between small ethereal clouds and luminous rock crystals. Enjoy the show!

Hans J. Wegner CH25 Chair

Designed in 1950, Hans J. Wegner's CH25 Armchair was created in post WWII Europe during a time of new ideas and innovation. Among them, was Wegner's vision of crafting furniture from woven paper chord - a war-time substitute material with a history dating back to the American Civil war. We invite you to view the video below to learn a bit more about Wegner's CH25 chair, its beautiful handcrafted construction and the wonders of paper chord weaving - a sustainable material that today is a mark of high end craftsmanship due to its labor intensive / skill demanding process.

THE PRICE OF DESIRE: A FILM ABOUT EILEEN GRAY & A LEGACY NEARLY LOST
By Alex

Eileen Gray - The Price of Desire

Nearly 40 years after her death and some 80 + from the height of her career, famed Irish furniture designer and architect Eileen Gray's (1878-1976) star continues to rise with a much anticipated movie due out this fall. Entitled The Price of Desire, the film is partially shot at one of the most important modernist homes ever built - Eileen Gray’s Villa E1027. The story line is a controversial one, focusing on how a cocktail of 20th century envy and chauvinism nearly effaced Gray’s name from design history.

In a recent interview at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, the film’s director Mary McGuckian describes the heavily researched furnishings and sets as 'incredibly authentic' – elaborating that “[The film] is an art piece and it is intended to… to an extent elucidate a cinematic visual experience that is inspired by [Gray's] aesthetic…”

The Price of Desire's director Mary McGuckian talks to DoCoMoMo's Shane O'Toole

The Price of Desire will have a festival launch this autumn, the location of which will be released on twitter at @EileenGrayE1027. For those able to carve out an hour, the video above offers some fascinating details on the making of the film and its historically-based dramatic storyline. To view more of Eileen's work we invite you to swing by her page on SwitchModern.com.

PAST & PRESENT: Arne Jacobsen's Drop Chair
By Alex
8/16/2014 1:20:00 PM

Arne Jacobsen Drop Chair

Designed in 1958 by famed Danish architect/designer Arne Jacobsen, the Drop™ chair recently re-launched to much acclaim following an over 50 year stint in hibernation. The chair's compact and lovable form was originally produced alongside the iconic Swan™ and Egg™ chairs for Jacobsen's masterwork, the Radisson Blue Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. "It's a gorgeous little chair that inspires deep affection."* - nonetheless, the Drop™ was produced in extremely limited quantities and soon disappeared in the shadow of it's more famous siblings. That is until the people at Fritz Hansen decided it was time for a comeback.

As part of the re-launch, the original upholstered Drop™ was also translated into plastic form. We invite you to take a closer look (both past and present) at this charming chair through the lens of those who know it best - the people at Fritz Hansen. Enjoy the short film!

THE STORY OF THE AALTO VASE - AN ICON OF MODERN DESIGN
By Alex
7/27/2014 12:04:00 AM

aalto vase 1

Designed in 1936 by renowned architect Alvar Aalto, the Aalto vase's simple organic form was revolutionary for its time and met with immediate success following its 1937 debut. Today, this deceptively simple work of art is crafted just as it was over 70 years ago - meticulously and laboriously by a team of skilled craftsman out of a glass factory in Iittala, Finland.

THE CLOVERLEAF SOFA: Yesterday & Today
By Alex
11/27/2013 4:57:00 AM

Cloverleaf at the "Heimtextil" in Frankfurt (9171). © Panton Design, Basel

The product of a true design visionary, the Cloverleaf was created by famed Danish designer Verner Panton for the Cologne Furniture Fair (1970). With only five versions ever made, the forward thinking design of this modular sofa was but a flash in the illustrious designer's career. That is until recently, when Prada spotted the nearly forgotten gem and contacted Danish manufacturer Verpan to bring the Cloverleaf back to life. In the brief period that has ensued, velvety green Cloverleafs have been popping up in Prada stores across the globe. The charms of this tête-à-tête gone-wild have not stopped there, as the Cloverleaf has recently taken up residence in prestigious museums, offices and most recently, our very own Switch Modern showroom. And so today, we invite you to be wooed by a nearly half century old design that was truly ahead of its time. Enjoy!
