New From Glas Italia

Last month Switch Modern's founders, Roy and Doug, took Milan Design Week from top to bottom in search of the very best furniture, lighting and accessories making their way to market this 2015. While heads may still be spinning from the sensory overload of it all, we've been itching to share several new introductions from the crystal glass specialists at Glas Italia. Each piece or collection of pieces represents a collaboration between Glas Italia and a renowned international talent, ranging from Japanese artist Tokujin Yoshioka to Italy-based designer Patricia Urquiola. We hope you love the new additions as much as we do!

Patricia Urquiola’s new Shimmer collection uses a special iridescent, multichromatic finish to add warmth, color and dimension to a traditionally cold material.

The PRISM Cabinet & Bench by Tokujin Yoshioka  is composed of high transparency glass, beveled at the perfect angle to create a prism like sparkle. We're in love!

Bocci Has Done it Again - Introducing The New 16 Series
By Alex
4/28/2015 1:39:00 PM

Bocci 16 Lighting Series

Our friends at Bocci have done it again with the debut of their incredible new 16 series. Upon first glance, the modular fixtures read as futuristic branching forms, highlighted by illuminated 'petals' of glass. Each petal is formed by pouring three separate layers of molten glass - white, gray, and clear - one on top of the other, to form a single tactile disc. From there, each disc is partnered with another to create a one-of-a-kind petal.

Designed for complete modularity, the 16's system of branching armature carries low-voltage electricity and allows for an infinite variety of forms, ranging from the tree-like structures Bocci installed at the famed Fairmont Pacific Rim hotel in Vancouver to the chandeliers they debuted at this year's Euroluce in Milan. We're absolutely smitten!

The 16 series will become available through Switch Modern this May, 2015.

Moooi Milan Design Week 2015

Last year, Moooi’s presentation at Milan's Salone del Mobile was described as nothing short of Haute Couture and this year the Netherlands-based brand brought their magic once more - presenting an exciting new range at via Savona 56. The focus of this year's show centered around a new line of lighting, furnishings and the debut of a groundbreaking new carpet collection. All pieces were showcased in a series of inspirational living vignettes / "product haikus" set against backdrops of monumental portraits by photographer Rahi Rezvani in a marriage of creative minds and mediums.

Fritz Hansen Celebrates the New Grand Prix Chair with Charity Auction & Tattoos
By D
9/5/2014 1:04:00 PM

Pietro Seda Tattoos Fritz Hansen

In celebration of the re-launch of the original wooden legged version of Arne Jacobsen's 1957 Grand Prix chair, the furniture brand Fritz Hansen has teamed up with Italian designer Diego Grandi and famed Italian tattoo artist Pietro Sedda to create nine tattooed chairs (two in leather and seven in wood). The concept behind the collaboration was devised by Grandi who, as the project's art director, created a narrative in which the graceful forms of the chairs would to be treated as if human and the embellishments added as defining marks - tattoos - to its 'skin'. The result is a melding of the over half-century-old designs of Jacobsen with the contemporary tattoo art of Sedda, linking great talents of the past and present - in celebration of the Grand Prix's launch into the future.

The chairs will make their debut in an installation designed by Diego Grandi on September 11th and will remain on display at the Republic of Fritz Hansen Store in Milan through November 13th . During this time, they will be available for purchase via silent auction, the proceeds of which will go to the Dynamo Camp Association - a camp designed for children whose lives are affected by disease.

BOURGIE THE REMIX: A World Tour To Culminate in Charitable Auction
By Alex
6/6/2014 11:51:00 AM

bourgie 1

Designer/musician, Pharrell Williams' strong-arm rendition of Kartell's Bourgie.

Designed in 2004 by Kartell's art director Ferruccio Laviani, the Bourgie Lamp is one of the Italian brand's best sellers and at just 10 years of age, something of a design icon. In the spirit of design collaboration and to help celebrate Bourgie's successful first decade in production, Kartell has invited 19 A-List designers and creatives to re-imagine the traditional baroque-inspired lamp for a traveling international exhibit.

bourgie 2

The Stockholm design trio behind Front infused Bourgie with a little swagger by applying heat to its plastic form.

bourgie 3

Patricia Urquiola really mixed things up via a complete deconstruction / reconstruction of the Bourgie into a glitzy chandelier.

bourgie 4

The Brooklyn based duo behind Snarkitecture honored or maybe snubbed the birthday boy, by making him disappear beneath a beautifully draped fiberglass sheet.

Kicking off the design fueled tour, fourteen re-imagined Bourgies made their debut at this year's Milan Design Week only to be joined in New York City by five additional pieces at last month's International Contemporary Furniture Fair. The growing collection of one-off lamps are slated to continue their travels before being sold in an online charitable auction later this year. We'll keep you updated but if a one-of-a-kind Philippe Starck, Kelly Wearstler or Lenny Kravitz designed lamp seems a bit out of reach... we invite you swing by and check out the original Bourgie over on SwitchModern.com.

Marcel Wanders' solo exhibition at the Stedelijk
By Alex
9/26/2013 8:05:00 AM

marcel wanders

Beginning February 1, 2014, Amsterdam's premier modern art museum - the Stedelijk - will debut a major retrospective of one of the city's most recognized designers, Marcel Wanders. The exhibition will present over 400 works by the furniture and accessory designer, spanning his 25 years in practice. Which brings us to why our friend is depicted staked through like an entomological specimen... The concept behind this contemporary exhibit is a life and work pinned up and laid bare for inspection. Perhaps a little terrifying for Wanders but likely fascinating for us.

And now a bit about Marcel Wanders - Based in Amsterdam, Wanders got his start following his 1988 graduation from The Netherlands School of the Arts Arnhem. In 1996, just after opening his own design firm, Wanders gained international recognition for his contemporary Knotted Chair, and in 2001 he co-founded and became artistic director of the successful luxury design brand, Moooi. In addition to his roles at Moooi and designing for the likes of B&B Italia, Cappellini, Poliform and more, he regularly takes on architecture and interior design projects. Today, Wanders' work is celebrated on an international scale and can be found in some of the most prestigious art museums worldwide.

For more, swing by SwitchModern.com to view some of Wanders' personal designs, along with his curated furniture and accessories collection for Moooi.

Eileen Gray Retrospective
By Roy Otwell
3/18/2013 8:10:00 AM

The Centre Pompidou in Paris is presenting a retrospective of the work of the Irish artist, architect and designer Eileen Gray (1878-1976) through May 20th. This is the first large-scale homage to the great talent, whose work was influenced by Art Deco, by Japanese lacquer artisanry and also by her intense engagement with modern ideas.

To learn more about Eileen Gray, watch the video above on the Centre Pompidou website.

Today, Eileen Gray is primarily known for her famous furniture designs: the E1027 Adjustable Table, Bibendum armchair and Brick Screen are icons of design history.

You can see many of Eileen Gray's classic modern furniture designs in our ClassiCon Store in our Eileen Gray collection.
