switchmodern loves Morris Lapidus (1902-2001). Idiosyncratic, baroque, and flamboyant, Lapidus knew his audience and never compromised his vision. After a career in retail interior design, his first large commission was the Miami Beach Sans Souci Hotel, followed by several transformative hotel commissions along Collins Avenue. In 1952, he landed the largest luxury hotel in Miami Beach, the Fontainebleau Hotel, which was followed the next year by the equally successful Eden Roc.
In 2000 Lapidus was honored by the Cooper-Hewitt as an "American Original,"an award created especially for him. From seductive modern shops and private residences to iconic hotels and residential towers in New York, Miami Beach, the Caribbean, and beyond, this iconoclast proves that "too much is never enough."
switchmodern hosted a book signing with Deborah Desilets, author of Morris Lapidus:An Architecture of Joy. Dennis Miller Associates' collection of Lapidus furniture are on display, along with a selection of the architect's watercolors.

ISO has found another source for design enlightenment. The mission of Denver-based Design Onscreen—the Initiativefor Architecture and Design on Film—is to document and disseminate the work of significant designers and contemporaryissues in design. Here's one of the many videos from Design Onscreen.
Hella Jongerius: Contemporary Archetypes is a documentary exploring the design approach of the world-renowned Dutch designer. Jongerius, who is regarded as one of the most innovative and creative designers working today, explores new visions for design, craft, art and technology in her products for everyday life. She creates unique pieces using industrial processes and archetypal forms, explaining: "Why
should I design anything new if certain forms have long proved their usefulness? An archetypal vase is, to me, round-bellied and has a narrow neck."

The Museum of the Moving Image, located in Queens, New York, reopened on January 15, 2011, after a major renovation and addition. Its striking new home, desigined by architect Thomas Leeser, features new facilities for interacting with and studying screen culture in all its forms. Since opening in 1988, the museum has advanced the public understanding and appreciation of the art, history, technique, and technology of film, television, and digital media through its collection of 130,000 artifacts, the largest collection of its kind in the world. switchmodern attended the press preview and was awed by the clean, modern spaces and new venues for rotating exhibitions and the permanent archives. It's easy to get to from Manhattan and is surrounded by good restaurants.

We don't miss much, as we are always ISO of good design. There's an exhibition on view through January 15, 2011, in New York City called Innovate:Integrate at the AIANY Center For Architecture. We attended the opening, because that's what we do—attend openings. It's fascinating, and we think you should go.
Innovate:Integrate is composed of two sections. The
first section of the exhibition, Innovate, highlights three priorities
in building technology: material performance, energy harvesting, and
daylight optimization. The second part of the exhibition, Integrate,
looks behind-the-scenes at three related topics:
construction technologies, construction management, and construction
logistics.
We like the fact that the center has a vibrant program for the public, especially ones for students. The more they learn about design early, the better design choices they'll make later.

Sukkah City was an international design competition to
re-imagine this ancient phenomenon, develop new methods of material
practice and parametric design, and propose radical possibilities for
traditional design constraints in a contemporary urban site. The designs of 12 were constructed in Union Square
Park and on display from September 19-20, 2010.
SWTICHMODERN, always in search of good design wherever it can be found, videotaped the installations for our blog. The project was successful from concept to construction, demonstrating that remarkable design need not always be realized by high-tech manufacturing.
One structure will be chosen by to stand and delight
throughout the week-long festival of Sukkot as the People's Choice
Sukkah of New York City. The process and results of the competition,
along with construction documentation and critical essays, will be
published in the forthcoming book Sukkah City: Radically Temporary
Architecture for the Next Three Thousand Years. Check back here for updates. |
