Alessi: Ethical and Radical presents Alberto Alessi's achievements since the 1970s in producing functional designs of exceptional quality by collaborating with leading architects and designers, including Ron Arad, the Campana Brothers, Achille Castiglioni, Michael Graves, Greg Lynn, Alessandro Mendini, Ettore Sottsass, Philippe Starck, and Robert Venturi. Different from any other modern manufacturer, Alessi has offered its collaborators absolute creative freedom and technical support in a series of radical, experimental projects, whether or not the results could ever be brought to production. Alessi: Ethical and Radical includes objects, drawings, videos, and photographs that demonstrate the company's unique approach to design and unique way of working with its designers.

AREAWARE never disappoints. Hand-crafted in an Indonesian farming
village, the Magno AM/FM radio has an appealing mix of retro and
modern styling. Made from new growth wood, for every tree that is used
in production, a new one is planted. Its uncoated surface should be
oiled periodically to encourage a deeper connection between user and
object. Available in four sizes: micro, small, medium, and large. All
sizes are MP3 compatible (except the Micro). The medium and large radios
also include short wave reception.
Singgih Kartono received the 2008 Good Design Award in Tokyo and
the 2009 British Insurance Award in London for this design. The radios
are also featured in the 2010 Cooper-Hewitt
National Design Triennial: Why Design Now Exhibition.

_ On
June 7th, the 12th International Venice
Biennale opened its doors, with
Foscarini as official sponsor. In this second year of partnership,
the
collection is more intensely represented in the public areas of the
Arsenale and the Giardini. The historic buildings are thus decorated
with the expressive power of a contemporary aesthetic: a cascade of
multi- coloured Tropico in the bookshop at the Arsenale, asymmetrical
forests of Havana in the Giardini,
precious Allegro Vivace in the area
inside the restaurant at the Arsenale, and a shower of Uto in the
outdoor garden.

We don't miss much, as we are always ISO of good design. There's an exhibition on view through January 15, 2011, in New York City called Innovate:Integrate at the AIANY Center For Architecture. We attended the opening, because that's what we do—attend openings. It's fascinating, and we think you should go.
Innovate:Integrate is composed of two sections. The
first section of the exhibition, Innovate, highlights three priorities
in building technology: material performance, energy harvesting, and
daylight optimization. The second part of the exhibition, Integrate,
looks behind-the-scenes at three related topics:
construction technologies, construction management, and construction
logistics.
We like the fact that the center has a vibrant program for the public, especially ones for students. The more they learn about design early, the better design choices they'll make later.

Sukkah City was an international design competition to
re-imagine this ancient phenomenon, develop new methods of material
practice and parametric design, and propose radical possibilities for
traditional design constraints in a contemporary urban site. The designs of 12 were constructed in Union Square
Park and on display from September 19-20, 2010.
SWTICHMODERN, always in search of good design wherever it can be found, videotaped the installations for our blog. The project was successful from concept to construction, demonstrating that remarkable design need not always be realized by high-tech manufacturing.
One structure will be chosen by to stand and delight
throughout the week-long festival of Sukkot as the People's Choice
Sukkah of New York City. The process and results of the competition,
along with construction documentation and critical essays, will be
published in the forthcoming book Sukkah City: Radically Temporary
Architecture for the Next Three Thousand Years. Check back here for updates. |
