Egg Armchair
Arne Jacobsen designed the Egg armchair for the lobby and reception areas in the Royal Hotel, in Copenhagen. The commission to design every element of the hotel building as well as the furniture was Jacobsen’s grand opportunity to put his theories of integrated design and architecture into practice. The Egg is one of the triumphs of Jacobsen’s total design. It was a sculptural contrast to the building’s almost exclusively vertical and horizontal surfaces. The unique shape guarantees a bit of privacy in otherwise public spaces. With or without a footstool, this is an ideal piece of furniture for lounge and waiting areas as well as the home. The Egg armchair is available in a wide range of upholstered fabrics and leathers. The chair comes in two versions: tilt and swivel or tilt and swivel with automatic return. The tilt and swivel star base is made of aluminum mounted on a satin polished steel pedestal. The shells are made of a synthetic material, padded with cold-cured foam. An upholstered footstool with aluminum base is available with the Egg. Manufactured by Fritz Hansen. Price includes shipping to the USA.
Designed in 1958.
